Creating Your First Garden, End to End

From an empty Garden to a working project with Seeds, Sections, and a Phase.

A Garden is a project. It holds Seeds (tasks), Sections (columns or lanes), and a Phase that tells everyone where the work is in its lifecycle. This is the full flow.

Step 1: Plant the Garden

From the Gardens page, hit Plant a Garden. Give it a clear, specific name. "Spring Planting 2026" beats "Garden". A description of one or two sentences is plenty.

Step 2: Pick a Phase

Phases are: Inception (still figuring out the scope), Planting (setting up structure and Seeds), Growth (active work), Harvest (wrapping up, reflecting). Pick honestly. Most new Gardens start in Inception.

Step 3: Add Sections

Open the Garden, click + Section. Sections are how you organise Seeds. Common patterns: To Do / Doing / Done, or Soil Prep / Sowing / Transplanting / Harvest, or by week. There's no rule. Do what makes sense for the work.

Step 4: Plant Seeds

Click + Seed inside any Section. Each Seed needs a title, a priority (High/Medium/Low), and ideally an Assignee (Caretaker). Give it a due date if it has one. Don't over-plan — Seeds can be added as the project unfolds.

Step 5: Assign Caretakers

Open a Seed, click the assignee chip, pick a member. Multiple Caretakers are fine. Caretakers see the Seed on their Dashboard and get notified when something changes.

A few tips from experience

  • Start smaller than you think. A Garden with 5 Seeds that get done beats one with 30 Seeds that don't.
  • Move to the Growth phase only when you actually start the work. Don't lie to your Garden.
  • When the Garden is done, mark it Harvest. The Vitality Score will quiet down and the Garden moves out of the active view.
