The Library: Where Sanctuary Knowledge Lives

The Library holds your Sanctuary's documents — house handbook, council notes, lease, recipe collection, whatever your community writes down. Each document is a Scroll.

What goes here, and what doesn't

Scrolls are good for:

• Anything more than three sentences that more than one person needs to read
• Bylaws, agreements, code of conduct, decisions of record
• Meeting notes (especially Council notes)
• Recipes, repair guides, tractor manuals
• PDFs you've been emailing around

Scrolls are not good for chat, micro-decisions, or comments on a single Seed (those go on the Seed itself). If a doc only ever has one author and is just for them, that's not a Scroll either — that's a personal note app.

Folders, and the trap of nesting

The Library lets you nest folders. Don't go more than two levels deep. The point of folders is "I can find this in fifteen seconds without searching." The moment you've got "Onboarding > New Members > Welcome > v3", you've outsmarted yourself. Search exists for a reason.

A common starter set: Onboarding, Council, House operations, Finances, Outside-facing. Add more only when something doesn't fit.

The four levels of access

Every Scroll has a permission setting on its Lock icon:

• Sanctuary — every member can read. Most Scrolls live here.
• Private — only you and people you explicitly invite. For sensitive things (HR notes, gate codes).
• Public — published to the open web at a stable URL. Useful for "About us" pages and public agreements.
• Commons — only on Ecosystem Hubs; pushes the Scroll into every connected Node's Library. Commons walkthrough.

PDFs and uploads

Drag any PDF onto the Library to upload it as a Scroll. The original file is preserved; the in-app view also shows a previewable version. Upload limit is 25MB per file.

The maintenance habit

Twice a year, walk the Library. Anything you'd be embarrassed if a new member found? Either rewrite or archive. The Library's value is roughly inverse to its size — a small, well-tended Library that's actually accurate beats a huge one with stale 2022 bylaws floating around.
